Don’t use household glass cleaners. They are full of colours and scents to make it look and smell nice, unfortunately they also make glass streaky and smeary.

Many in the U.S. swear by Invisible Glass, I use Gtechniq G6 Glass Cleaner. It does what it’s supposed to do.

If you want to use h ousehold products, use white vinegar and a crumpled up piece of newspaper.

Crumpled up newspaper?  I'd thought of white vinegar,  but I'd have never tried newspaper..

We used to use coffee filters to clean restaurant doors. They don’t leave streaks.

I have some hippie-ass non etching glass cleaner for the glass on my (heating) stove that I also use for the car. I think it’s just a vinegar based cleaner with smelly stuff added.

Awesome. I’m definitely going to try that next time I need to clean the inside of my windshield (where in the past I've taken the views that streaks were better than dirty)

Agreed, but the foam kind specifically. The clear liquid kind doesn’t seem to work as well.

Ye’, newspaper is fantastic. Just take a page and scrunch it up into a pad in your hand. Spray the glass, and wipe over, then turn the pad over in your hand to buff.

This is an old video but it’s a very very old household trick.

FYI, don’t saturate the glass, just enough to to wet the glass and be spread about, say two squirts.

I use this stuff, not a lot of smell and it really is streakless:

I got some generic aerosol can of “glass cleaner” at McLendon’s Hardware and it really does work - takes all the goo and interior build up off without much leftover streaking... much better than any Windex or other soap or vinegar based product I’ve tried.  Even works pretty well on sap dots/blobs on the windshield.

Streaks can greatly increase the sun’s glare, blinding you in traffic.

Why you shouldn’t clean glass early in the morning when the dew point is high, or if it’s cold, the glass is cold (but the temperature on one side of the glass is higher), etc... all will increase the risk of streaks, as will wiping the inside of a frosted windscreen (always let the demister do it's job, because otherwise, your wiping the surface moisture off, but the glass is still cold, which will form condensation, etc...).

I'm still amazed, my first thought is that the ink from the newspaper would bleed out making things worse.   Like the coffee filters, I need to try that now..

The ink is surprisingly colour fast, though you may get some ink on your hand, it won’t be much and easily washes off.

It’s been used for generations. The paper is highly absorbent to water and grease (hell, chip shops used to use newspapers to wrap chips in).

Like one of the best cleaners is a lemon cut in half.

The funny part of this for me is that I knew that newsprint was very much the traditional serving wrap for fish ‘n chips for decades , and yet I never thought about why..

Ye’, then the U.K. and E.U. laws said they had to start using grease proof paper to line the wrapping. Doh. The ink is carcinogenic but so is the cereal boxes your cereal comes in as they are made from recycled n ewspapers. Doh.
